U14 girls A and B squads report - 3rd December 2023
Posted by Sarah Rendell on 18 December 2023
On Sunday 3rd December two U14 Cornish girls squads travelled to Taunton for some inter-county friendlies. The B squad played four 20 minute matches during the morning session. With a team of mainly attackers it took a couple of matches for them to begin to work together and have players in their most effective positions. They lost to Somerset B 0-3 and Devon 1 (Sanna Braxton) -4. However, after putting coaching tips from James Frewer and Sarah Rendell into practice the hockey improved and the Cornish team developed in confidence. Although not winning a match on that day, the goal deficit was reduced each time they played, ending with a draw. The results of the last two matches were a loss to Somerset A 0-2 and a draw against Dorset 0-0.
The 14 strong A squad played three 30 minute matches later in the afternoon. The first game was against Dorset. It took the girls a little time to warm up to playing after the trip to Taunton, resulting in a 0-0 draw. Next was Somerset. Cornwall played strongly for the majority of the match getting into the opposition's 'D' and making some shots, unfortunately unsuccessful. However, on the handful of occasions that Somerset managed to break through to their attacking end they did manage to score 2 goals. End result 0-2. A jiggle with players positions due to an injury and more positive passing in possession led to a strongly contested final game against Devon. In dwindling light Cornwall players Rosie Meier and Eva Newman converted their shots to earn Cornwall a 2-2 draw.
Well done to both squads for putting in maximum effort and building on their hockey skills and teamwork with each match played.
